La structure allait ensuite conna\u00eetre une activit\u00e9 importante pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. guerre .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De 100 lits au d\u00e9part, l&rsquo;h\u00f4pital Marrel passe \u00e0 128 lits en 1976, r\u00e9partis en m\u00e9decine, chirurgie, hospice et maternit\u00e9. L&rsquo;ouverture de cette derni\u00e8re a lieu en 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En vingt ans, il y aura 7000 naissances. Mais l\u00a0\u00bbembellie ne dure pas, puisqu&rsquo;en 1982, le nombre de nouveau-n\u00e9s tombe \u00e0 162\u2026 Un an apr\u00e8s, c&rsquo;est la fermeture du service. Les lits de maternit\u00e9 sont reconvertis en 18 lits de moyen s\u00e9jour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>De 7000 naissances \u00e0\u2026 162 en vingt ans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 70, la chirurgie connaissait aussi une baisse qui annon\u00e7ait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un rapprochement avec l&rsquo;h\u00f4pital de Saint-Chamond. L&rsquo;id\u00e9e \u00e9tait de cr\u00e9er un \u00e9tablissement commun, enti\u00e8rement neuf et de r\u00e9server les anciennes structures ripag\u00e9riennes aux activit\u00e9s g\u00e9riatriques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le service chirurgie ferme en 1995. En janvier 1996, l&rsquo;entit\u00e9 juridique Centre Hospitalier du Pays de Gier voit le jour.
