C&rsquo;est un affluent direct du Rh\u00f4ne en rive droite.<br>Le mot Gier d\u00e9rive du latin Jaresis qui a aussi donn\u00e9 le terme Jarez qui d\u00e9signe les coteaux de la vall\u00e9e du Gier et qui entre dans la d\u00e9signation de nombreuses communes : Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez, Saint-Paul-en-Jarez, Saint-Romain-en-Jarez, La Tour-en-Jarez, Saint-Christo-en-Jarez, ainsi que Rive-de-Gier et
